Keep It Clean!Submitted by gswindel on Wed, 09/30/2009 - 07:49
Just wanted to make a note to all you day trippers about your responsibility for keeping a river or lake clean. While you may be on that particular waterway for only a couple hours the rest of the world will be coming back forever. It's easy really... you're floating in a ready made trash can. Throw your cans, bags, napkins, etc in the bottom of the boat when you stop for lunch. Then it's easy to to just collect up your garbage and get it into a bag when you set out again. So keep that in mind please. Have fun and enjoy your time but leave no trace that you ever went down the river. The next time you head out for a trip, you'll thank yourself. |
Rivers are tough - we all need to help.
As you know, paddlers share rivers with lots of users who may not share our appreciation of this resource. I keep a lawn trash bag in my boat during day trips, which allows me to collect the styrofoam bait buckets, ubiquitous plastic bottles, and other small stuff. I appreciate canoe liveries that clean up the bigger stuff, like tires, grocery karts, and other junk that makes it into our rivers, even in the most remote areas. The one area that is difficult to address is sewage plant outflows. On a recent trip down one of Ohio's "natural and scenic rivers," we ran into an untreated outflow from a newer plant that was not supposed to pollute the river. It was disgusting. All sewage plants have untreated discharges at times. We should covet all streams (and portions thereof) that don't currently have treatment plants, as clean water is a disappearing thing in most areas of the country.
